How we work
We aim to represent teenagers who live or go to school in harpenden, by bringing their views to a monthly meeting.
- The youth town council normally meets on the third thursday of every month in the town hall.
- Before the meetings, everyone is sent an agenda, which lists the items that we'll be discussing. This gives people an opportunity to prepare something to say or research one of the issues before coming to the meeting.
- A copy of the minutes (notes) from the previous meeting is also sent, so that people can remind themselves of the items discussed, and the actions that were agreed on.
In the meetings
- Alex Ferguson, our worker from Youth Connexions, starts the meetings by giving announcements that are relevant for us. For example, these may include upcoming concerts and gigs, workshops, and other opportunities.
- Afterwards, we discuss the items that are listed on the agenda.
- We discuss the issue as a group for a while, coming up with ideas and suggestions. Then we decide on what action to take, and move on to the next item on the agenda.
Open forum
After all the items on the agenda have been discussed, we have an 'open forum' session. This is an opportunity for people to bring up any other ideas that they have come up with. We discuss these like any other issue that was on the agenda. After this session is over, the meeting is closed and we all carry out whatever action we decided to do, and get ready to report on it at the next meeting.
